Why Trent Alexander-Arnold Is Not Playing For Real Madrid Vs PSG

Why Trent Alexander-Arnold Is Missing Real Madrid vs PSG: Club World Cup Blow for Los Blancos

Real Madrid are heading into their Club World Cup semi-final showdown with PSG but hold the phone, where’s Trent?

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Madrid’s shiny new signing and Xabi Alonso’s creative weapon down the right, is nowhere to be seen in the matchday squad. And no, it’s not a tactical mind game or a sudden benching. It’s injury.

COPE’s Miguel Ángel Díaz reports that the former Liverpool star suffered a setback in training ahead of the semifinal, with muscle discomfort in his right leg. No word yet on the full extent of the issue, but it’s bad enough to rule him out of arguably the biggest game of his short Madrid career so far.

Before the knock, Trent had started every match in Madrid’s Club World Cup campaign and was just starting to hit his stride racking up assists in his last two appearances. The Spanish sunshine seemed to be working its magic on him until it didn’t.

Without the 26-year-old available, Xabi Alonso turned to a familiar utility man: Fede Valverde.

The Uruguayan is a midfielder by trade but has experience at right-back from Carlo Ancelotti’s last hurrah and he’s been thrust into that uncomfortable role again on a night when nothing short of brilliance will do.

Raúl Asencio has also been drafted into Alonso’s patchwork defence, replacing the suspended Dean Huijsen. Meanwhile, up top, Madrid are going full throttle: Vinícius Júnior, Kylian Mbappé, and Gonzalo García lead the line. No pressure.

As for Trent’s recovery? Still a mystery.

If Madrid make it past PSG and into the final against Chelsea, it’s anyone’s guess whether the England international will be fit to return.

And if Fede Valverde has to face Khvicha Kvaratskhelia down that flank in the final? Buckle up. That duel promises sparks, sweat, and possibly one or two yellow cards.
