Refugee Team To Debut In Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026

Details regarding the composition of the Youth Refugee Olympic Team are yet to be finalised for Youth Olympic Games 2026. This initiative follows the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s ongoing objective to support displaced people through sport at all levels.

In a historic landmark, the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026 will be the first to host a Youth Refugee Olympic Team.

The Youth Olympic Games in the capital of Senegal will see African-based refugee athletes participate for the first time ever in the event.

Details regarding the composition of the Youth Refugee Olympic Team are yet to be finalised for Youth Olympic Games 2026. This initiative follows the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s ongoing objective to support displaced people through sport at all levels.

IOC President Thomas Bach said the goal is to make the world aware of the issues of refugees.

“We look forward to assembling a team that will not only highlight the global displacement and refugee crisis, but also underline the importance of bringing together the best young athletes in the spirit of Olympism at an inclusive Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026,” said Bach

The selection of the Youth Refugee Olympic Team for Dakar 2026 will be determined at a later date by the IOC Executive Board.

Africa currently has more than 47 million out of the more than 120 million displaced people globally. The Youth Refugee Olympic Team in 2026 will play a significant role in highlighting to the world this pressing issue.

Working on this initiative, the Olympic Refugee Foundation has for many years been supporting displaced people across the African continent through sport. The Foundation currently runs programmes in Burkina Faso, Burundi, Kenya and Uganda. It has also taken steps in Rwanda and Congo, reaching and supporting thousands of young people affected by displacement.
