Star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has stepped down as the captain of IPL franchise the Lucknow Super Giants. LSG confirmed the news through a post on their social media platform. As per Lucknow’s official statement, Pant requested the management to relieve him from captaincy duties, and his request has been accepted.
“Rishabh approached the franchise with this request and we have respectfully accepted it,” LSG Director of Cricket Tom Moody said. “These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective – rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards.”

LSG acquired Rishabh Pant for Rs 27 crore
Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise acquired Rishabh Pant on a whopping Rs 27 crore in the IPL 2025 auction; he was also named as the captain. Pant started his IPL career with the Delhi Capitals, and he also led the side for three years – 20220, 2021, and 2024 (he missed the 2023 season as he was recovering from the tragic incident).
Pant struggled with his bat as he scored just 269 runs despite scoring a hundred in 2025. Pant continued his disappointing form as he scored 312 runs in 14 innings. LSG, which ended the 2025 season in ninth place, showed no improvement and ended the IPL 2026 at the bottom of the table
Earlier, KL Rahul was the skipper of Lucknow Super Giants, but after two playoff finishes and one seventh-place finish, the two parties parted ways, with the franchise looking for a reset under captain Rishabh Pant. But that alliance has now ended after a couple of underwhelming seasons.
