SA W vs WI W: Brits, Wolvaardt, Klaas Shine As South Africa Win Series In Style

South Africa Women handed the West Indies Women an emphatic defeat to win the SA W vs WI W ODI series, claiming a massive 166-run victory over West Indies Women through the DLS method in the rain-affected series decider at Cave Hill, Barbados.

Tazmin Brits’ breathtaking century, Laura Wolvaardt’s classy 75, and Masabata Klaas’ scorching four-wicket haul were the best things in a one-sided match as the West Indies collapsed early in the adjusted target of 288.

Having lost the toss, South Africa Women were asked to bat but turned the situation on its head with a dominant 184-run stand for the first wicket between Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits. Brits seized the initiative early, scoring boundaries against Zaida James and blasting a six and four off Jannillea Glasgow.

Wolvaardt came in on the attack as both the batters reached their fifties, Brits off 45 deliveries and Wolvaardt off 41. The two increased the 100-run partnership to just the 13th over, maintaining the run rate over 7.

Brits batted to a well-made century off 89 balls, and then was out for 101 off 91 balls to Afy Fletcher. Wolvaardt was soon out too, for 75, also caught by Fletcher, who had the last laugh with figures of 3 for 53.

Kapp Steadies Finish Amid Rain Breaks

Even a mid-innings collapse of 200 for 1 to 264 for 6, when South Africa wobbled, was taken in stride by Marizanne Kapp. She played an unbeaten 34 that helped to tie down South Africa at 278 for 6 in 45.5 overs, as rain again curtailed the game and ended their innings early.

Klaas and Mlaba Wreck West Indies’ Top Order in SA W vs WI W

Pursuing a revised DLS target of 288, the West Indies were in trouble from the word go. Their in-form captain, Hayley Matthews, got out cheaply for 8. The top order folded miserably, staggering at 10 for 4 with their top four mustering only 10 runs.

Masabata Klaas made early inroads, claiming three wickets in her first two overs, while Nonkululeko Mlaba added two more, leaving West Indies at 40 for 6.

Alleyne, Claxton Fight in Vain

There was a brief fight put up by Aaliyah Alleyne (34) and Jahzara Claxton, who contributed 65 for the seventh wicket. But Klaas came back to snap the association, ending with 4 for 21, and sealed the series victory by bowling the West Indies out for only 121 in 27.5 overs. Stafanie Taylor was injured and did not bat, adding to the misery of the West Indies.
