Another Feather On The Hat: Serena Williams Wins Princess of Asturias Award For Sports

Adding yet another gem on her glittering crown, Tennis legend Serena Williams has been declared the 2025 Princess of Asturias Prize for Sports winner. The organisers made the announcement on Wednesday (28 May).

The honour awarded in Spain by the Princess of Asturias Foundation is considered highly prestigious and recognizes excellence in many fields, including sports, the arts, literature and more. Princess Leonor of Spain presides over the annual ceremony each autumn in the city of Oviedo.

Princess Leonor of Spain presides over the annual ceremony each autumn in the city of Oviedo. The jury deeming Williams as “one of the greatest tennis players in the history of the sport,” they emphasized how her advocacy off the court also played a role in her selection.

“In addition to her extraordinary sporting career and competitive spirit, Serena Williams has always been a staunch advocate for gender equality and equal opportunities between men and women in sports as well as in society in general,” stated the awards in a press release.

The American joins athletes such as Spanish badminton player Carolina Marin, distance runner, Eliud Kipchoge, the Olympic Refugee Foundation and skier Lindsey Vonn, in the list of the winners of Princess of Asturias Prize for Sports.

Serena Williams will also receive the 50,000 euro monetary allotment that accompanies this esteemed award.

A four-time Olympic gold medallist, Williams ended her career with 23 Grand Slam titles and 73 overall singles titles.

She has already received multiple honors, from the NAACP Image Award’s 2003 President’s Award to the CFDA Fashion Icon Award in 2024. The 2025 Time 100 nominee remains an influential public figure, cementing herself as a trailblazer for diversity and gender equity in the sports industry and beyond.

The Princess of Asturias Awards are given in eight categories (Sports, Concord, Communication and Humanities, Literature, Social Sciences, Arts, Technical and Scientific Research and International Cooperation), with the awards given in a ceremony held in the city of Oviedo in the region of Asturias in October.
