Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani Takes Helm as FIBA President

Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani has been elected as the new president of FIBA, succeeding Hamane Niang, with unanimous support.

Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani has emerged as the freshly elected president of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), succeeding Hamane Niang. The world basketball governing body announced this transition during the FIBA Congress held in Manila.

Expressing his gratitude, Thani stated, “I am deeply honoured to undertake this responsibility, representing Qatar, Asia, and all 212 National Federations across five Regions.” He conveyed his commitment to the role in a FIBA statement.

Thani’s election received unanimous support at the Congress. The new Central Board members for the 2023-2027 term were also introduced during the event, according to reports from Xinhua.

Having previously served as FIBA Asia’s President since 2002, Thani’s extensive experience has been recognized. He was further appointed as FIBA vice president in 2019, marking his significant contribution to the basketball community.

The inaugural meeting of the new Central Board is slated for September 9 in Manila. This gathering aligns with the concluding week of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, marking an eventful start to Thani’s presidency.
