Shikhar Dhawan, a veteran Indian opener, is doing everything in his power to complete his fairytale comeback into the Men In Blue white-ball squad despite the fact that he may not be considered for India in the World Cup year. In the fourteenth game of the lucrative tournament at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shikhar Dhawan played another captain’s knock in the sixteenth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Dhawan, who had previously come under fire for his T20 strike rate, silenced his detractors with a magnificent knock against the 2016 champions. Dhawan played a heroic knock to help Punjab post a respectable total in the low-scoring contest, in which only two PBKS players were able to register a double-digit score. Punjab scored 143-9 in 20 overs after the former Delhi Capitals (DC) opener smashed a quick-fire 99 off 66 balls. Sam Curran (22) was the second-highest run scorer for Punjab Kings against Hyderabad after Shikhar Dhawan’s unbeaten knock of 99.
When the PBKS captain was questioned about his valiant knock at the post-match presentation, Dhawan, who is renowned for his cool demeanor, made a noteworthy statement. “I hope my strike rate pleased you since you tweeted something. I can bowl googlies too,” Dhawan exclaimed following the game. The PBKS captain’s masterful batting performance earned him the title of Player of the Match. Dhawan’s historic score of 99 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2023, the reigning champions’ first victory of the new campaign, did not, however, help Punjab Kings.
In addition, Rahul Tripathi’s brilliant 74 off 38 balls and Aiden Markram’s unbeaten 37 off 21 balls helped Hyderabad defeat Dhawan’s team at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium by 7 wickets. When asked about Punjab’s performance against the former IPL champions, Dhawan attributed their 7-wicket loss to their ineffective batting lineup.
“As a batting unit, we lost too many wickets consecutively and were unable to post a significant total on the field; as a result, we lost the game. A score of 175–180 would have been acceptable. Despite having a decent appearance, the wicket was seaming and swinging. Of course it was discouraging to keep seeing wickets fall, but the wicket wasn’t behaving the way we anticipated. It was seaming and occasionally kept low. But that’s just part of my batting unit’s learning process, and that’s okay, said Dhawan.
