Shreyas Iyer Recovering Well After Freak On-Field Injury in Sydney: India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has shared a positive update on teammate Shreyas Iyer, who recently suffered what was described as a “life-threatening” injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. The good news is that Iyer is now stable, recovering well, and even replying to messages from his teammates.
Scary Moment in Sydney
The frightening incident happened at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25 when Shreyas Iyer sprinted forward to take a tough catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. Though he held onto the catch brilliantly, he collapsed in pain moments later and had to be taken off the field.
At first, the team thought it was a regular injury. But once inside the dressing room, they realized the situation was far more serious. “See, we’re not the doctors. When we saw it from the outside, it appeared he was normal after taking the catch. Only those who were there (with him on the field) can say (how bad the injury was). After going into the dressing room, they realised he will need more care. Then he was rushed to a specialist who revealed what has happened. Eventually, he started talking normally,” Surya explained.
Serious Internal Injury
Iyer was rushed to a Sydney hospital after his vital signs dropped to dangerous levels. Scans revealed a ruptured spleen, internal bleeding, and damage to his rib cage caused by the awkward fall. He was immediately admitted to the ICU for treatment and close monitoring.
Thankfully, his condition improved quickly. According to reports, Iyer underwent surgery on Tuesday (October 28) to treat the spleen injury. The procedure went smoothly, and doctors have confirmed that he is now out of the ICU and in stable condition.
“He’s Stable and Talking Normally” – Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav said the team was deeply concerned when they first heard the news but are now relieved. “We spoke to him,” Surya told reporters on Tuesday. “When we got to know about his injury, I called him. Then I realised that Shreyas doesn’t have his phone on him, and I called our physio Kamlesh Jain, who told us that he’s stable.”
“(About how he was on the) First day, I can’t say much, but he’s looking good (now). We’ve been in touch for two days, and he’s been replying. If he’s able to reply on the phone, then he’s stable,” he added.
Suryakumar Yadav also mentioned that doctors are keeping a close eye on Iyer’s progress. “Doctors are there with him; it’s looking good. Everything is normal, but he will be kept under observation for a few days. He’s been talking to everyone, so it’s good,” he said.
Surgery and Recovery
As per Cricbuzz, the surgery was a minor procedure, and Iyer has “totally recovered since.” However, doctors have advised him to rest for at least five to seven days before resuming any physical activity. The report stated, “We can confirm that Shreyas Iyer recently underwent surgery and has totally recovered since. The surgery was apparently a minor procedure, but it has required Iyer to rest for at least five more days, possibly even up to a week.”
Dr. Rizwan Khan, the Indian team’s physician, is currently in Australia and monitoring Iyer’s recovery closely. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also ensured that one of Iyer’s family members is with him in Sydney during this period.
In Good Spirits and Feeling Better
Shreyas Iyer’s recovery has been encouraging. He has been eating home-cooked meals prepared by local friends and managing his daily activities comfortably. His condition continues to improve, and the medical team will review his progress before deciding when he can safely travel back to India.
Suryakumar Yadav, speaking at the pre-match press conference, summed up the team’s feelings beautifully: “The doctors and physios said that whatever happened was unfortunate. This kind of thing rarely happens. But Shreyas is also rare. So, rare things sometimes happen with rare talent. But it’s okay. God was with him; he is recovering really well. All the doctors are supporting him. BCCI is in full support. So, he will recover soon, and then we will take him home with us.”
It’s a huge relief for fans and teammates alike that Shreyas Iyer is out of danger and on the road to full recovery.
