India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been shifted out of the ICU of a Sydney hospital after suffering a severe rib cage injury during Sunday’s third India vs Australia ODI.
As per a source cited by NDTV, Iyer had internal bleeding due to the impact while he dove back to make an incredible catch from Alex Carey. Although his condition is stable at present, doctors are keeping a close watch on him for infection, and he will be kept in the hospital for a minimum of seven days. Iyer is also being observed for infection. He is also likely to be in the hospital for a week,” the source disclosed.
“Health Remains Delicate but Stable,” Says Reports
A Cricbuzz report acknowledged that Shreyas Iyer’s health remains fragile but stable. Sources have confirmed that though Iyer is no longer in danger, he is still undergoing specialised medical care for internal bleeding due to the injury.
“Iyer was immediately admitted to a hospital in Sydney with Dr Rizwan Khan, the Indian team doctor, by his side,” the report further said.
A couple of close friends are also reported to be with him in Sydney, while one of his relatives is likely to fly in from Mumbai as soon as visa formalities are done. The process was caused minor delays over the weekend due to embassy closure.
BCCI Confirms Spleen Injury and Continued Treatment
India Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) released an official announcement stating that Shreyas Iyer had an impact injury to his left lower rib cage area that caused a laceration injury to the spleen.
“Shreyas Iyer has an impact injury to his left lower rib cage area. Scans have confirmed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is recovering well, medically stable, and is under treatment,” BCCI stated.
The BCCI Medical Team, along with experts in Sydney and India, is keeping a close watch on his recovery. The Indian team physician will stay behind in Sydney to monitor Iyer’s day-to-day developments.
Shreyas Iyer Collapsed in Dressing Room After Catch
Shreyas Iyer fainted in the dressing room upon return to the field, with his vital signs hitting alarmingly low levels, according to a PTI report. He was promptly taken to the hospital, where he underwent scans that confirmed the spleen injury.
“The BCCI medical staff reacted very quickly after Iyer’s vital parameters varied. It might have been life-threatening, but he is a hard boy and should recover soon,” a BCCI source informed PTI. The prompt action by the team physio and doctors probably averted a worse fate.
The Injury Incident: Brilliant Catch Turns Expensive
The accident happened in the Australian innings when Shreyas Iyer ran backwards from backward point to catch an incredible catch off Harshit Rana’s bowling, leaving Alex Carey out.
While making the catch, Iyer seemed to fall awkwardly on his left ribcage and instinctively held his side in pain. He first went on but afterward also complained of pain and was examined by the team medical staff before being rushed to the hospital.
Support from Team and Fans
Ever since news of the injury surfaced, the cricket fraternity has sent well wishes to Shreyas Iyer. Fellow players, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, are said to have checked in for information from Sydney, and people from all over India took to social media to pray for his speedy recovery.
The Indian administration has chosen to monitor him in Sydney until the doctors give the nod that he is fit enough to travel.
