Head coach Gautam Gambhir didn’t hide his disappointment after watching how Gill got out. It was a moment that clearly frustrated the Indian camp.

Gill’s bad luck at the toss continued as he lost his fifth toss in a row as captain. England chose to bowl first, and India had a shaky start, losing both openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul early. That brought Gill to the crease in the 16th over.

Once he was in, Gill looked solid and confident, playing some beautiful shots and appearing to be in control. He quickly moved past the 20-run mark, and fans began hoping he would continue his trend of converting good starts into big centuries.

Before his dismissal, Shubman Gill achieved a significant milestone. By scoring two runs on the sixth ball of his innings, he surpassed the legendary Sir Gary Sobers to become the highest run-scorer by an away captain in a Test series played in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). Gill started the Test with 722 runs in the series and went past Sobers’ 722-run tally, which the West Indian great had set in England during the summer of 1966.

But things took a turn in the 28th over. On just the second ball, England pacer Gus Atkinson bowled a full delivery, which Gill tapped toward short cover. The ball wasn’t far from Atkinson, who quickly sprinted forward. Despite that, Shubman Gill had already set off for a single.

His partner, Sai Sudharsan, tried to stop him, but Shubman Gill didn’t listen. By the time he realized the danger and tried to turn back, it was too late. Atkinson threw in a sharp direct hit and sent the stumps flying. Gill could only watch as England celebrated the breakthrough.

Shubman Gill was dismissed for 21 off 35 balls, hitting four crisp boundaries during his short stay. Unfortunately, his risky call shifted the momentum in England’s favor.
