Shubman Gill is excelling with incredible consistency in the IND vs WI Test series currently in progress, breaking many records this year in 2025. Gill hit his fifth Test hundred this year, securing his position as the captain with the most calendar year hundreds. Gill and his five hundreds for the year are tied with the record set by Virat Kohli, who also had five hundreds as captain in 2017 and 2018.

But that is not the entire story, as he accomplished his five hundreds in only 12 innings; only Alastair Cook (nine innings) and Sunil Gavaskar (10 innings) have done it in fewer innings.

Gill also reached an incredible milestone in the number of matches, matching the great Don Bradman’s feat of scoring five hundreds as a captain in seven matches. Cook and Gavaskar were quicker to join that mark, doing it in six and five matches respectively.

Gill’s Captains’ Average: Only Bradman Better

With a staggering average of 84.81 as a Test captain, Shubman Gill is now second only to Don Bradman (101.51) among all Test captains who have played at least seven matches. This Test vs. the West Indies in Delhi is his seventh Test as captain, and with his dazzling average, Gill has reinforced his place among cricket’s legends.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Stellar Rise: The Second-Youngest to Score Multiple 150+ Scores

Another adolescent star in the present IND vs WI Test series is Yashasvi Jaiswal. In just 24 years of age, Jaiswal has now tallied five innings in his career of 150 plus, the only player besides Don Bradman (8), to accomplish this before the age of 24. His consistency in the top-order has been staggering, and with this innings he now joins the likes of the elite of cricket, angling to compete for one of the best innings of all time.

Overall, Jaiswal has made seven centuries in his 26-Test career, equaling the record for most hundreds scored by an opener before age 24 set by Graeme Smith. He is now only behind Bradman (12), Sachin Tendulkar (11), and Garry Sobers (9) for the most Test centuries at under 24 years of age.

Jaiswal Joins Elite List: Only Bradman and Lara Converted Hundreds into 150+ Scores

Jaiswal’s knack of converting hundreds into big knocks is admirable. He is one of just three players, along with Bob Simpson and Brian Lara, to have converted five of their initial seven Test centuries into scores of 150+. It reflects his thirst for big scores and his great skill to bat for extended periods of time in Test cricket.

India’s Record First-Innings Total: Highest Without Extras

India’s 518 for 5 in the first innings vs West Indies in Delhi is a record-breaker once again. It was the highest Test cricket score without a bye or a leg bye an unusual achievement, previous highest being 513 by Bangladesh against Sri Lanka in 2018.

Only two runs were scored via extras in India’s 518, both wides. This leaves it the second-lowest number of extras in a Test match with a total over 500 runs, behind only Australia’s 549 for 7 against South Africa in 1950, which included only one extra run.

West Indies’ Pacers’ Failures: 318 Balls Without a Wicket

The first innings success of India was marked with the West Indies pacers bowling 318 balls without a wicket. This has happened only on three occasions in Test cricket when West Indies fast bowlers have bowled more than 300 balls in an innings and did not have a wicket. The previous two examples were against New Zealand in 1972 at Wellington (540 balls) and Pakistan in 2016 at Abu Dhabi (432 balls).

Interestingly, in the 1972 example with New Zealand, Garfield Sobers was part of the outing where the West Indies firemen bowled extra spin and seam overs totaling 42 overs without taking a wicket.

India’s Impressive Top-Order Partnerships: A Historic Achievement

In a remarkable display of batting togetherness, India secured a landmark achievement by having fifty plus partnerships for all five of their first wickets. This is now the third time in Test cricket history that India has achieved such an accomplishment, the other times being against England in 1993 (Mumbai) and Australia in 2023 (Ahmedabad).
