Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep announced her retirement from tennis at the age of 33 on Tuesday after losing in the first round of a tournament in her home country of Romania. Halep made the announcement after a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Lucia Bronzetti at the Transylvania Open in Cluj, Romania.

Addressing the audience, she said, ‘I don’t know whether I am making this announcement with sadness or happiness. I think I am feeling both but I have found peace with this decision. I have always been realistic.’ Halep said, ‘My body is no longer the same as before. Even though my performance was not good, I wanted to say goodbye to tennis by playing in front of you.’

Halep reached number one in the world rankings for the first time in 2017 but is currently ranked 870th. She was given a wild card entry to play in this tournament in Romania. Halep, who struggled with injuries in her career and faced suspension due to doping, was once at the top of women’s tennis.

She won Grand Slam singles titles at Wimbledon in 2019 defeating Serena Williams in the final and at the French Open in 2018 defeating Sloane Stephens in the final. Apart from this, she has reached the final of the Australian Open in 2018 and the semi-finals of the US Open in 2015. Her best career ranking has been number one, which she achieved in October 2017.

She won a total of 24 titles in her illustrious career. Halep won 580 matches in her career and lost 241. She has also participated in doubles matches. In doubles, she won 67 matches and lost 71. She has one title in the doubles category. Her best ranking in doubles has been 71.
