Spain looks to strengthen Euro qualification bid against Cyprus

2 Min Read

Spain’s national football team has an opportunity to solidify its path to the European Championships next summer as it faces Cyprus in a crucial Euro qualifier in Granada, southern Spain.

Spain swiftly put the controversy surrounding Football Federation President Luis Rubiales behind them in their recent match against Georgia, securing an impressive 7-1 victory.

This triumph has propelled Spain to six points from their three qualifying matches so far. Another victory would grant them a valuable cushion in the standings, especially considering that Norway currently occupies third place in the group.

Alvaro Morata was the standout performer in the game, netting a hat-trick. The only setback for Spain was injuries to Dani Olmo and Marco Asensio, prompting coach Luis de la Fuente to call up Yeremi Pino and Ferran Torres as replacements for Tuesday’s match.

On paper, Cyprus appears to be a less challenging opponent for Spain. Cyprus has suffered four defeats in their qualifying matches to date, scoring just two goals while conceding 11. In their most recent match, they endured a 3-0 loss at home to Scotland.

Given the apparent weakness of their opponents, Coach De la Fuente may take the opportunity to make some adjustments to his starting lineup. Sixteen-year-old Lamine Yamal, who became the youngest player ever to score for Spain against Georgia, could receive his first start.

In central defense, David Garcia or Pau Torres may get an opportunity, and Alejandro Balde is expected to assume the left-back role. Nico Williams, who also found the net against Georgia, is likely to start as well.

In the midfield, Ferran Torres, Rodri, and Gavi showcased their skills in the Georgia match, and De la Fuente is unlikely to make significant changes in that area. However, he may contemplate changes in the goalkeeping position, with either Kepa, now at Real Madrid, or David Raya receiving a chance between the posts.
