Two of the top officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association, KSCA secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, have quit their jobs with “moral responsibility” for the stampede at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)’s IPL 2025 victory party. The two officials resigned and submitted their letters to KSCA president Raghuram Bhat.

At the event, which was meant to commemorate RCB’s inaugural IPL title triumph in 18 tries, 11 individuals perished, and many others were hurt.

KSCA Secretary, Treasurer Resigns after Chinnaswamy stampede

The letter to the KSCA on Friday evening read: “Given the unexpected and unfortunate incidents that have taken place in the last two days, and although our role was very limited, but as a matter of moral responsibility, we would like to say that last evening we have submitted our resignations to our respective positions as secretary and treasurer of the KSCA.”

The Bengaluru Police registered a first information report (FIR) against the RCB franchise on Thursday. The police, in the FIR seen by reports, have stated that they had refused permission to RCB to hold the event at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the stampede took place.

RCB were named the first accused in the FIR, followed by DNA Entertainment, event partners of the franchise, and the KSCA, the body that runs the stadium.

FIR filed against RCB marketing and revenue head

On Friday, the police issued a confirmation of the arrest of Nikhil Sosale, RCB marketing and revenue head, on the instructions of newly-inducted police commissioner SK Singh, who succeeded his predecessor after the latter was relieved of duty by Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah following the incident.

Later during the day, the KSCA approached the court in a writ petition, where they contended that the FIR against them was a “knee-jerk” response by the police, made under compulsion from the state government.

The KSCA also asserted that the accident was a sudden rush and crowd surge caused by an unexpected surge, and no intent or motive could be imputed on the petitioners. It reiterated that gate and crowd control were not the responsibility of the KSCA, but of RCB’s, the organisers of the event, and the police.

The legal counsel representing KSCA had also objected to the arrest of Sosale, arguing that it was indicative of a targeted action. Sosale has questioned his arrest and approached the Karnataka High Court, according to Bar and Bench, an Indian legal news website.

RCB has not released an official statement yet following the arrest. The franchise, however, made an announcement on Thursday declaring a compensation of INR 10 lakh to each of the victims who lost their lives, and undertaking the expenses for the treatment of the injured in the accident.
