T20 World Cup 2022: List of Umpires and Referees, as Stated by ICC for the Upcoming Tournament

In context of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup which is going to place from October 16 to November 13, 2022, a full list of umpires and referees have been announced. As per reports, most of the players have already made it to Melbourne, Australia where the World Cup has been scheduled to take place. However, the selections for semi-finals and final of the multi-team tournament is yet to come out. 

Approximately, 16 umpires along with 4 referees will be associating for this upcoming tournament of 2022. According to reports, there will be umpires who were a part of the last year’s final, which witnessed Australia achieving their first ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, till date. The list also comprises of umpires who have been featured in previous year’s tournament, that took place in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Also, in the referee section four former cricketers from England, Zimbabwe, Australia and Sri Lanka will be taking over the charge of the tournament. The complete checklist of umpires and referees is being mentioned below: –

As in each and every profession, or to be more precise in every aspect of life there’s the necessity of a mentor, who will be there to guide, supervise and make sure that each task is being carried on smoothly. Just like that, any cricket tournament requires the guide and supervision of umpires along with referees. 

The match officials like them mostly supervises the fixtures of competitive sporting and makes sure that the proper rules are being followed off. Well, a brief detail comprising of the roles and responsibilities of match officials are discussed below.

First of all, the most important duty of match official is to make sure that all the rules related to the sport are followed by, and any sort of indiscipline is addressed and taken care of by them. Second, as most of the sports events are bound to timings, therefore it is the sole responsibility of officials to keep a track of that. Also, they might be asked to keep a track of time, that’s been wasted and add up the same at the end of the regulation time of that match. Third, it is the duty of official to respond quickly in cases of emergencies and take decisions regarding the commencement of the match. 

Fourth, the official must inspect players as well the equipment before and during a sporting event. The umpire needs to make sure that all the players along with their playing equipment are in proper order. Moreover, they basically act as the primary point of contact in regard to the match for sports administrators and officials. They are further required to report to governing body, based on which action against the offender is taken in case of any complaints like racism or violence.
