T20 World Cup: South Africa ends England’s unbeaten run as they win by 10 runs

The 39th Match of 2021 T20 World Cup was an England vs South Africa encounter played on Saturday, 06 November 2021 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, United Arab Emirates.

This encounter is from Group 1 of the Super 12 round at the ongoing 2021 T20 World Cup.

South Africa’s campaign in the tournament ended with a win against England

1st Innings – South Africa puts 189 Runs on the board

The Proteas lost an early wicket in the form of Reeza Hendricks as Moeen Ali bowled him out. South Africa were 15/1 in 2.4 overs.

By the end of the Powerplay, South Africa were 40/1. Then, Quinton de Kock departed after scoring a fine knock of 34 Runs (off 27 balls), with that South Africa were 86/2 (11.2 overs).

A 103 run partnership between Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram lead to them putting up 189/2 (20 overs) on the board  with van der Dussen’s hitting 94* (off 60 balls) and Markram at 52* (off 25 balls) remaining unbeaten.

2nd Innings – England’s Target is 190 Runs

Jason Roy got injured and had retired hurt. Then, Jos Buttler- 26 (off 15 balls) – got dismissed in the last over of the powerplay, as Temba Bavuma took an excellent catch. England were 58/1 (5.3 overs).

Just a few deliveries later, there was another dismissal as Jonny Bairstow left – due to an LBW decision with Tabraiz Shamsi picking the wicket. England were 59/2 in 6.2 overs.

A 51 run partnership between Moeen Ali and Dawid Malan steadied the innings but Ali got dismissed at 37 (off 27 balls). At that stage, England were at 110/3 (12.2 overs).

Then, Dawid Malan got out on 33 (off 26 balls), England were 145/4 in 16.2 overs. Then, the next wicket to fall was in the form of Liam Livingstone- 28 (off 17 balls)- and they were 165/5 (18.1 overs).

In the last over, England needed 14 runs to win but Kagiso Rabada striked with a hat-trick as he dismissed Chris Woakes, Eoin Morgan and Chris Jordan. England finished their innings at 179/8 (20 overs).

As a result, South Africa won the match by 10 runs. Hence, the Player of the Match was awarded to Rassie van der Dussen for his – 94* (off 60 balls).
