Thomas Tuchel has admitted that he was confused by his side’s uninspiring display against Juventus in the Champions League. Juventus beat Chelsea as Chiesa led the Turin side to a surprise victory against the European Champions.
Chelsea managed to register just a single shot on target against Juventus all game. Even though the Blues had the ball 70 percent of the time in the match.
Federico Chiesa’s 46th-minute goal was enough for Juventus to overcome Chelsea. It was Chelsea’s second defeat in a matter of days, following their 1-0 loss to Manchester City at the weekend.
Tuchel said that Juventus’ deep defensive line made Chelsea struggle to find their rhythm and intensity. Juventus retreated to a deep defensive line and made life harder for Chelsea. The European Champions managed just a single shot on target thanks to a tough Juve rearguard.
Thomas Tuchel said that his side gave Juventus two big chances to grab the game.
He said,
“It’s very difficult to put on a high rhythm against a team who defends so deep. If we defended deep against City it was difficult for them to create chances. It was the same for us here. But the difference was we gave two big chances and gave the belief back into the stadium.”
Tuchel further added,
“We were lacking runners. Once we started to do other things, we made mistakes and that cost us a bit of belief. A shooting problem. If we don’t shoot, they cannot be on target. If you play against a deep block like today, it’s hard to take shots.
We found the spaces, it wasn’t easy. We had a lot of shots, but I think there are some chances late in the game where it wouldn’t have been so hard to find the target.”
