Ricky Ponting was selected as the captain of the Australian national cricket team for the One-Day Internationals in February 2002 at the age of twenty-seven. Ricky Ponting took over the captaincy from Steve Waugh, who was dropped from the limited-overs side following Australia’s early exit from the 2001-02 VB Series.

During his phenomenal captaincy tenure, Ricky Ponting led the Aussies to numerous glorious victories, including the 2003 World Cup, the 2007 World Cup and a record total of two Champions Trophy editions in the years 2006 and 2009. Under Ricky Ponting’s captaincy the Australian side clinched a record total of 34 consecutive World Cup matches. Moreover, with a dominating winning percentage of 76%, Ricky Ponting won a record total of 165 ODI matches as captain, which continues to be the highest total as of July 2025.

Dhoni was selected as the skipper of the Indian team in the ODI format at the age of twenty-six after Rahul Dravid voluntarily stepped down following India’s early exit from the 2007 World Cup.

Throughout his reigning ODI captaincy that lasted till 2000, Hansie Cronje led South Africa to multiple victories, including the infamous 1998 ICC KnockOut Trophy. Overall, Hansie Cronje clinched a total of 99 ODI matches as a captain with a winning percentage of 71.7%, making him the third most successful captain in the history of One-Day Internationals. In 2000, Hansie Cronje’s glorious cricketing career was majorly plagued due to the infamous 2000 match-fixing scandal wherein he was declared guilty. Unfortunately, just a couple of years later in June 2002, Hansie Cronje passed away in a tragic plane crash at the age of thirty-two.

Stephen Fleming was appointed as the skipper of the New Zealand ODI squad in February 1997 at the age of twenty-three.

The top-order batsman of the New Zealand squad, Stephen Fleming, went ahead and led the squad to a phenomenal streak of glorious victories, including the infamous 2000 ICC Champions Trophy throughout his captaincy tenure that lasted till 2007. Stephen Fleming captained New Zealand in a total of 218 ODI matches and managed to clinch 98 out of them with a decent winning percentage of 48.2%.
