Top 5 Lowest T20I Totals defended By India At R. Premadasa Stadium: The high-voltage IND-PAK T20 World Cup 2026 fixture is scheduled to take place on the 15th of February at the legendary R. Premadasa Stadium. The Colombo pitch is known for its slow and low nature, and the chances of high-scoring thrillers are very low. Instead, it is all about astute bowling and pressure build-up.

As India is all set to take on another high-voltage fixture against Pakistan, it is time to revisit the Top 5 lowest T20I totals defended by India at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

Why Defending Totals in Colombo Is Possible

Unlike flat batting pitches, the R. Premadasa surface helps:

  • Spinners in the middle overs
  • Slower bowlers in the death overs
  • Teams that build pressure with dot balls

India has traditionally dominated here by defending modest, albeit not enormous, scores.

Top 5 Lowest T20I Totals Defended by India at R. Premadasa Stadium

1. 152/6 vs South Africa – T20 World Cup 2012

Result: India won by 1 run

India’s lowest successful defense in Colombo was in the 2012 T20 World Cup under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. India batted first and made 152/6, which seemed a little low. South Africa got off to a flying start in the Power Play and were in command throughout the chase.

But:

  • The move by Dhoni to use spinners slowed down the South African run rate.
  • The regular fall of wickets added pressure to the South African side.
  • South Africa were left disappointed, losing the match by only 1 run.
  • This is arguably India’s most dramatic T20I defense in Colombo.

2. 159/5 vs Afghanistan – T20 World Cup 2012

Result: India won by 23 runs

In another 2012 World Cup fixture, India scored 159/5 after batting first.

Though the score wasn’t very high, the bowling effort ensured that Afghanistan never really challenged the target. Afghanistan, batting first, were bowled out for 136, thus gifting India a comfortable 23-run victory. This game again showed India’s ability to defend mid-range scores on the low-pitch of Colombo.

3. 164/5 vs Sri Lanka – 2021 T20I Series

Result: India won by 38 runs

In India’s 2021 tour of Sri Lanka during the COVID-19 pandemic, India set a target of 164/5 in the first T20I. A half-century was scored by Surya Kumar Yadav. Shikhar Dhawan scored 46.

Sri Lanka had a hard time against India’s bowling lineup, managing only 126. The 38-run win shows that a score of 160 can be well above par for a team at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

4. 170/4 vs England – T20 World Cup 2012

Result: India won by 90 runs

India’s 170/4 against England in the 2012 T20 World Cup match turned out to be one-sided. Rohit Sharma scored a match-defining half-century. Virat Kohli contributed 40 valuable runs.

England’s batting lineup crumbled under the pressure and spin, and they were bowled out for just 80, resulting in India’s massive 90-run victory, one of the biggest at this ground.

5. 176/3 vs Bangladesh – Nidahas Trophy 2018

Result: India won by 17 runs

Even though this is not a low score considering a modern T20 standard, 176/3 is still a respectable score considering conditions in Colombo.

In the 2018 Nidahas Trophy:

  • Rohit Sharma scored 89 runs.
  • Suresh Raina scored 47 quickly.

Bangladesh put up a strong fight, thanks to a half-century from Mushfiqur Rahim, but only managed to score 159. India won this game by 17 runs, once again proving their tactical prowess.

What This Means for IND vs PAK T20 World Cup 2026

Considering the high-voltage India-Pakistan clash scheduled for the same venue, here are the predictions:

  • A score of 155-170 may be defendable.
  • Spin and middle-overs will be important.
  • Pressure management, rather than firepower, will be the key.

Considering India’s impressive defensive record at the R. Premadasa Stadium, even a moderate first-innings score may be enough in the upcoming game.
