Australia’s opener Travis Head had everyone smiling – including India’s Axar Patel – when he was asked if the upcoming ODI series against India could be the farewell tour for cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

The much-awaited ODI series will mark the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to international cricket after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Both have retired from T20Is and Tests and haven’t played a match since the IPL 2025 season. This time, India will be led by Shubman Gill, who takes over as captain from Rohit Sharma.

Speculation Over the Duo’s Future

As the series opener approaches, fans and experts alike are wondering if Rohit and Kohli will continue till the 2027 World Cup. The first ODI will be played at the Optus Stadium in Perth, with the buzz around the two Indian stars only growing stronger.

Two days before the match, Travis Head and Axar Patel faced the media. While praising the Indian veterans, Head added a light-hearted moment that made everyone laugh – especially Axar.

Travis Head’s Heartfelt Praise and Light Moment

“They have been awesome for India; I guess Axar can speak more highly about them than myself. But two quality players, two of the best white-ball players. Virat is probably the greatest white-ball player. Rohit is not that far behind,” Head told reporters.

He went on to speak highly of Rohit as a fellow opener before sharing a cheeky thought.

“Someone who opens the batting. I have huge regard for what Rohit has been able to do. I am sure they will be missed at some stage, but I think they both are going until 2027 (looks at Axar Patel and the all-rounder smiles). They both are trying to get to the World Cup. It is great for the game that they are still playing,” he added.

Axar Patel on the Veterans’ Readiness

Axar, who is set to fill Ravindra Jadeja’s role as India’s main all-rounder, echoed Head’s admiration for the two stalwarts.

“They are world-class players. They know what to do, and they are ready to go. They are professionals, and they know what to do. They are ready to go. If you speak about their form, they have been preparing well; hence, I think they are ready. Everyone has given their fitness test; they are raring to go now,” Axar said.

The Countdown Begins

The first ODI between India and Australia will take place in Perth on October 19, promising plenty of excitement – and perhaps a glimpse of what’s next for two of India’s greatest cricketers.
