In 2022, Velasquez learned that his son had been attacked by Harry Goularte, who worked at his mother’s daycare. In a fit of rage, Velasquez took the law into his own hands and pursued Goularte, who allegedly molested his son. Velasquez chased the suspect’s car for over 11 miles with a 40-caliber revolver while firing five shots to gain confrontation with Goularte.

However, during the pursuit, Velasquez accidentally shot Paul Bender, Goularte’s stepfather, in the arm. Thankfully, Bender survived with non-life threatening injuries. Although many supporters were outraged by the incident, they viewed Velasquez’s actions as justified due to his instincts to protect his son. Nevertheless, Velasquez was arrested and faced lengthy legal problems due to the incident.

Velasquez entered the plea after several months of courtroom hearings. As popular opinion swung in his support, Velasquez broke more than a half-dozen laws of the State of California throughout his chase, for which he would ultimately be convicted.

Monday, Velasquez was given five years of imprisonment, substantially shorter than the 30-year sentence initially desired by the prosecutor. Most of his fans and followers had also been expecting a more favorable result, considering the emotional and personal aspects of the incident.

A Legacy in the UFC: Cain Velasquez’s Career Highlights

Cain Velasquez is a legendary figure in the UFC. He started in 2008, with only two prior professional MMA fights to his name. His rise to stardom was rapid, and in 2010 he was granted a title fight against the current UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. Velasquez established himself as a top fighter knocking out Lesnar in under a round, winning the UFC Heavyweight Championship in one of the most dominant performances.

Throughout the years, Velasquez would develop one of the strongest legacies in UFC history. While he was knocked out in the first round by Junior dos Santos in 2011, the two fighters would develop a legendary feud. Velasquez would avenge his defeat by taking the following two meetings, demonstrating his tenacity and talent.

Even with all his incredible accomplishments within the cage, Velasquez’s career was plagued by a string of injuries, limiting his capacity to fight. Since beating dos Santos in their trilogy bout in 2013, Velasquez fought just three more times during the next six years, the end of an era for one of the most dominant champions the sport has seen.

Cain Velasquez’s path from UFC Heavyweight Champion to convicted felon is a sad twist in the life of a man who touched the hearts of millions of fans worldwide. His actions, as much as they were driven by a need to defend his son, resulted in a legal fight that robbed him of his liberty.

As Velasquez starts serving his five-year prison term, fans of the UFC will surely remember him as one of the best heavyweights to ever step inside the octagon.
