India’s modern-day batting superstar Virat Kohli delivered a brilliant performance in the opening ODI against South Africa. His sensational century helped India put up a massive total at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi, setting up a comfortable win over the Proteas.
Virat Kohli Addresses Talk About His Test Return
There has been talk recently about whether Kohli might return to Test cricket, especially after reports suggested the BCCI was considering bringing back retired players. In his last international appearance at the SCG, he struck an unbeaten 74 after facing two consecutive ducks against Australia.
This time, though, he didn’t ease into the innings. Kohli walked in early after Yashasvi Jaiswal fell for 18 in the fourth over and immediately took control. From his body language, it was clear he was aiming big.
A Dominant 52nd ODI Century
Kohli played fearless, attacking cricket right from the start. He reached his 52nd ODI hundred in 102 balls, then switched gears beautifully. His knock ended at 135 from 120 deliveries, featuring 11 fours and 7 sixes, before Nandre Burger finally dismissed him.
His effort earned him the Player of the Match award, and during his chat with Harsha Bhogle, Kohli made it clear that he has no plans to return to Test cricket. He said, “That’s how it’s always going to be – I’m just playing one form of the game.”
He also shared that he intends to stick to ODI cricket until he retires from the international stage.
Mental Preparation Behind Kohli’s Success
Kohli opened up about how he prepared for the series, explaining that keeping his mind sharp was more important than heavy training. He said everything came together nicely for him during the match.
He explained, “Today was really nice to kind of get into the game like that. Pitch played decently in the first 20-25 overs before it started to slow down. Was just about staying in the space of enjoyment. Of course when you get a start, you get into the situation, you know what needs to be done.
“The experience kicks in. I’ve never been a believer of preparation. All my preparation is mental. As long as my physical levels are up and the mental sharpness is there, then you know it’s fine. I took a day off before the game. I’m 37 and need time for recovery.”
Experience Takes Over
Kohli added that after playing so many matches, he understands his body and game well enough to know when he is ready. For him, it’s about staying fresh, focused, and excited for every match.
He continued, “If you’ve played 300-odd games and so much cricket, you know when you’re hitting balls in practice, you know the reflexes are there and the physical ability is there to bat long. As long as you’re hitting the ball well and playing good cricket, it’s about physically fit, mentally ready and excited.”
