Wasim Akram, a former cricketer for Pakistan, blasted a video produced by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday for leaving out the name of Imran Khan, the team’s sole ODI World Cup champion captain, from the clip.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) produced a film on August 14 with the hashtag #BeyondJustOneDay, showing the significant achievements of some of their top players and the most significant milestones in Pakistan cricket history, starting with their first international match in 1952.
Imran, who is not only a respected figure in Pakistani cricket history but also held the position of Prime Minister from August 2018 to April 2022, received harsh criticism for his absence from the film.
The 57-year-old Akram claimed that watching the video gave him the “shock of his life” and he requested the PCB to “apologise” for omitting Imran from it.
“After long flights and hours of transit before reaching Sri Lanka, I got the shock of my life when I watched PCB’s short clip on the history of Pakistan cricket minus the great Imran Khan… political differences apart but Imran Khan is an icon of world cricket and developed Pakistan into a strong unit in his time and gave us a pathway… PCB should delete the video and apologise,” Akram said in a tweet.
Notably, Imran is regarded as one of the best all-around players in the sport and the best cricketer Pakistan has ever produced. In 1992 at the MCG, he guided them to their first world championship.
The iconic cricketer also guided Pakistan to notable ODI victories in Sharjah and the Nehru Cup, a miniature World Cup held in India in 1989, as well as three famously drawn Test series against the finest team at the time, West Indies.
After a two-decade political career, Imran was elected Pakistan’s Prime Minister in 2018. However, he was removed from office last year following a vote of no-confidence in the parliament.
Since then, the former cricketer turned politician has been protesting the current administration and has been hurt following an assassination attempt. Imran was detained ten days ago and given a three-year prison term for failing to report the revenues of state gifts to the Pakistani Election Commission.
