A bowling machine is an essential tool in cricket practice nets, particularly for batsmen. It is a mechanical device that simulates the action of a bowler, delivering consistent and accurate deliveries. These machines allow batsmen to practice different types of deliveries without relying on a human bowler. Bowling machines are adjustable, enabling variation in speed, line, and length, replicating different bowling styles. They aid in developing timing, footwork, and shot selection, helping batsmen sharpen their skills.

  • Pitch mat

Pitch mats, also known as synthetic mats, are placed on the practice net surface to replicate the conditions of a cricket pitch. These mats mimic the bounce and pace of a natural wicket, allowing batsmen and bowlers to adapt their skills accordingly. Pitch mats are particularly useful for practising on flat tracks or preparing for specific playing conditions, such as seaming or spinning tracks.

  • Cones as targets

For practising accuracy of line and length bowlers use cones sometimes even shoes. These cones are placed at usually yorker length. Some great bowlers like Lasith Malinga practised their yorker lengths with shoes placed on the batting crease. Being a death bowler, Malinga relied heavily on the use of yorkers be it slower-paced yorkers or fast-paced yorkers.

  • Catching Cradle

A catching cradle is a device used to improve catching skills. It typically consists of a net suspended between two poles at different heights. Fielders practice catching high catches, low catches, and diving catches, helping them enhance their hand-eye coordination and reflexes.

  • Speed Gun/Radar Gun

A speed gun or radar gun is used to measure the speed of the ball delivered by a bowler. It helps bowlers monitor their pace and accuracy and assists batsmen in getting accustomed to different bowling speeds.
