Shubman Gill, Team India’s captain, made a light-hearted remark at the press conference after India’s massive 336-run win against England in the second Test at Edgbaston. This was India’s first-ever Test win at this venue in over 50 years.
Before the match, a journalist had reminded Gill about India’s poor record at Edgbaston. After the victory, Gill looked around the press room and cheekily said:
“I can’t see my favourite journalist. Where is he? I wanted to see him.”
The crowd laughed, and Gill’s comment quickly became a highlight moment after the game.
India Finally Wins at Edgbaston
India had never won a Test at Edgbaston in their previous eight attempts. But this time, they turned history around.
Gill led the charge with the bat, scoring 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second. His combined score of 430 runs in the match made him the second-highest run scorer in a single Test. Only Graham Gooch, with 456 runs against India in 1990, has scored more in one match.
“We Are the Best Team to Beat England”- Gill
Gill also spoke about not paying attention to history or old stats. He believed in the strength of his team and their ability to beat England.
He said:
“I even said before the Test match that I don’t really believe in history and stats. Over the last 56 years or so, we’ve played nine matches – different teams have come here. I believe we are the best team to have come here in England, and we have the capability to beat them, to win the series from here. If we keep making the right decisions and keep fighting, I think it would be one of the series to remember.”
India had lost the first Test at Nottingham, where England chased down 371 runs. But they bounced back strongly in the second Test with this record-breaking win.
Gill: “Captain Needs to Lead by Example”
Shubman Gill said that as captain, his goal is to set an example for others to follow. He wanted to play for the team and stay focused, especially during tough moments.
He explained:
“When you’re the captain, I think you need to lead by example. So that whenever there’s another player in that situation, you can command to that player that this is what the team requires right now – you have to put the team ahead rather than trying something.”
He added:
“If a good ball gets me out, it’s okay. But as long as I’m at the crease, I want to stay there and fight.”
What’s Next in the Series?
With the five-match Test series now tied at 1-1, the next match will be held at Lord’s, starting on July 10, 2025.
India will be full of confidence after their strong all-round performance at Edgbaston, especially with Gill leading from the front with both his bat and captaincy.
