5 Min Read

Hitting sixes is not something that everyone can do. Hitting 5 sixes in an over in IPL is highly improbable but some players have done so in T20 cricket. Rinku Singh, an Indian batter, was most recently added to the list. Some well-known players in T20 cricket have hit five or more sixes in a single over.

Some of the players on the illustrious list include Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh, Afghan batsman Hazratullah Zazai, West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard, South African batsman David Miller, West Indies batsman Evin Lewis, English batsman Ross Whiteley, India batsmen Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Tewatia, and Hardik Pandya, and West Indies batsman Chris Gayle.

At the 2007 T20 World Cup, Yuvraj became the first batsman to hit six sixes in a T20I encounter against England. In T20Is, Pollard became just the second player to accomplish the feat in 2021. So far in the IPL, nobody has ever hit six sixes in an over.

Rinku’s 5 sixes in the final over against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium became the fifth instance when 5 sixes were hit in an over in IPL.

Chris Gayle vs Pune Warriors India, IPL 2012

It is no surprise that the ‘Universe Boss’ features on this list. Chris Gayle became the first batter to hit 5 sixes in an over in the IPL in 2012. It came at the batter’s favourite venue, Chinnswamy Stadium in Bangalore.  Gayle was in his zone against the Pune Warriors India. The milestone was achieved by the ‘Universe Boss’ in the 13th over of the second innings. The victim of Gayle’s wrath was leg-spinner, Rahul Sharma.

Rahul Tewatia vs Punjab Kings, IPL 2020

Rahul Tewatia rose to fame thanks to his knock for the Rajasthan Royals against the Punjab Kings in Sharjah. The hard-hitting batter was initially struggling and almost lost the game for his team. Chasing a mammoth total of 224 runs, the Royals needed 51 runs off the last three overs. As fate would have it, Tewatia had his redemption in the 18th over, when West-Indian pacer Sheldon Cottrell came to bowl. Everyone was left surprised as Tewatia hit 30 runs off the over thanks to his 5 sixes.

Ravindra Jadeja vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 2021

IPL 2021 was a special IPL as there were matches being held at neutral venues. One such match was between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The CSK all-rounder was at his best as he had a great performance with both, bat in the first innings and ball in the second innings. Harshal Patel came in to bowl the last over of the first innings when he faced the wrath of Ravindra Jadeja’s bat. Jadeja scored the joint-most runs in an over in the IPL history. Patel’s over went for 37 runs courtesy of Jadeja’s 5 maximums.

Jason Holder and Marcus Stoinis vs Kolkata Knight Riders, IPL 2022

Jason Holder and Marcus Stoinis, two all-rounders who played for the Lucknow Super Giants, combined to hit five sixes in an over. Shivam Mavi, the pacer from Kolkata, bowl the 19th over. Stoinis hit three sixes off the first three balls after being on strike. On the fourth ball, he was out. Holder then entered the crease and on the final two balls once more cleared the boundary ropes.

Rinku Singh vs Gujarat Titans, IPL 2023

In the match against the Gujarat Titans, the hitter from Aligarh came out swinging. In the final five balls, Kolkata Knight Riders needed to score 28 runs to win, and Singh crushed Gujarat seamer Yash Dayal for five straight sixes.

Dayal struck Singh with three full tosses in a row before getting burned. He then attempted a slower one, but Singh slammed it over long-on. In order to secure the victory, KKR needed four runs off the final pitch, and Singh smacked yet another six. The final over broke even more records, check out this article to find more.
