Which super overs in the IPL were the most exciting?
The IPL is famous for its close and exciting encounters. In this article, we will look at the most exciting super overs in IPL.
The Indian Premier League over the years has been famous for its close matches. The 16th season is currently underway and in the last 15 seasons there have been 14 super overs in IPL.
Even though there have been many strong batting performances and great bowling spells, nothing ever comes close to a super over in terms of excitement in the IPL. A super over occurs when both the teams score the same amount of runs in a game. The super over then takes place as a tie-breaker to have a winner.
Here is a look at the most exciting super overs in the IPL.
Mumbai Indians vs Gujarat Lions
In 2017 Gujarat Lions were hosting Mumbai Indians at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium. When both the teams scored 153 runs the game went on to a super-over.
Mumbai Indians came on to bat with Jos Buttler and Kieron Pollard taking on James Faulkner. Buttler took a single on the first ball and gave Pollard the strike. Pollard hit a four and six in the next two balls. With 11 runs in three balls MI lost two wickets and gave the Lions a target of 12 runs.
It was Jasprit Bumrah from MI who faced off against Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum. In the super over Bumrah bowled a no-ball and a wide still managed to keep the GL tally to just six runs by nailing his yorkers.
Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders
There were no rules for a double or triple Super Over in 2014. The team who hit the most boundaries would win the match if a Super Over resulted in a tie. In 2014, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) cleverly used that rule to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
In each team’s 20 overs, 152 runs were scored. James Faulkner’s six went for 11 runs by KKR, who batted first. In response, Steve Smith and Shane Watson scored nine runs off Sunil Narine’s first five deliveries. Due to the boundary count rule, even two runs would have been sufficient for RR to win the Super Over even though they required three. Smith simply tapped the ball to the offside and stole a few runs as RR defeated KKR in a memorable victory rather than attempting a boundary or a six.
Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings
In 2020, the first double Super Over in the history of the Indian Premier League was played between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS). In each team’s 20 overs, 176 runs were scored. By the way, in each team’s first Super Over, they only scored five runs. MI set a target of 11 runs for the second Super Over, which PBKS quickly overcame in just four deliveries. It was Chris Gayle who came on to bat for the Punjab Kings in the second super over which meant only one thing. The ‘Universe Boss’ smashed the first ball for a six and gave Mayank Agarwal the strike who hit two successive fours to win the game for his team.
