Umpires often do not catch the attention of the viewers amidst an international game. Umpires in an international game play a huge role in making sure that the game is played fairly and without any bias.
ICC has a list of Elite Panel Umpires who given their seniority are given the responsibility to officiate in international games. ICC decides that neutral umpires are selected for a series or match between international sides.
The maximum base salary an Elite Panel Umpire can receive is $400,000. Marais Erasmus from South Africa and Rod Tucker from Australia are the oldest members of the ICC Elite Panel Umpire list. Both Erasmus and Tucker have been part of the ICC Panel Umpire since the year 2010. The latest entrant to this list is Ahsan Raza from Pakistan and Adrian Holdstock from South Africa. Raza and Holdstock both joined the list in the year 2023.
Out of all the umpires on the Elite Panel Rod Tucker has stood in the most number of test matches, 76 while Adrian Holdstock has stood in the least test games, 5. Marais Erasmus has stood in the most number of ODIs, 92 while the Indian umpire, Nitin Menon has stood in the least ODIs, 24. The latest entrants Raza and Holdstock lead the list for officiating in the most T20Is. Raza has the most matches under his belt as he has stood in 72 T20Is while Michael Gough from England has stood in the least T20Is, 14.
The only Indian umpire on this list is Nitin Menon. Along with Menon the other International umpires from India are Jayaram Madanagopal, Anil Chaudhary, Virender Sharma and K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan. The international umpires are responsible to stand in matches that take place in their home countries.
England has the most umpires on the Elite Panel. Richard Kettleborough, Richard Illingworth and Michael Gough are the umpires from England. Both Australia and South Africa have two umpires on the list. India, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Pakistan all have one umpire in the Elite Panel.
