Will USA and West Indies keep 2024 T20 World Cup rights?

The United States of America was given the co-hosting rights of the 2024 T20 World Cup along with the West Indies by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The ICC are now reportedly planning to move the World Cup to England stating the lack of cricketing infrastructure in the USA. There were even reports that the marquee clash of India vs Pakistan would be held in the USA because of the balance of fans of the two nations.

The USA Cricket Board (USAC) stated that they are confident of retaining the rights to host the premier event. USAC is confident that they remove all the doubts that the ICC may have about the lack of cricketing once they conduct the inaugural season of Major League Cricket (MLC).

Major League Cricket

The first Major League Cricket T20 will start on July 13 and end on July 30, in its first year. There will be six teams competing, and the games will take place in Texas at Grand Prairie Stadium.

In reality, a number of prominent cricket players have committed to the MLC T20, including Jason Roy of England, Adam Zampa of Australia, Matthew Wade, Marcus Stoinis, and Moises Henriques.

A USAC administrator in an interview told PTI that they are ready for organising MLC. The administrator said, “We are ready for staging the MLC T20, and some frontline cricketers from across the world are participating in the tournament and that will go a long way in establishing our credentials as a big-ticket event host.”

International cricket in the USA

The administrator talked about talking about their experience of hosting international cricket. He said, “We also have a taste of hosting high-profile cricketing events at Lauderhill (Florida) involving India and West Indies, and now we know what to expect when top teams are competing in terms of infrastructure and other facilities.”

The Central Broward Park in Lauderhill, Florida has hosted some of the West Indies and India cricket teams’ international games. The ICC Venue inspection team has scouted a number of locations as potential venues for the event, including Oakland, Florida, and Los Angeles.

It will be interesting to see whether the USA and West Indies are able to retain the rights to host the T20 World Cup or not. The MLC will play a crucial role in retaining the rights. The USA is a great market for the expansion of sport and the ICC will keep that in mind while making their decision.
