Royal Challengers Bangalore’s debut in the inaugural Women’s Premier League has been a nightmare. The Smriti Mandhana-led team has lost all five games, and their chances of making the playoffs are dwindling.
On the other end of the WPL 2023 spectrum is Mumbai Indians, a team that can do no wrong, having won all five of their matches and becoming the first to reach the playoffs. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led team defeated the Gujarat Giants on Tuesday to maintain their lead.
The Delhi Capitals are currently second in the table and, if their current form continues, should join MI in the playoffs.
However, the team that wins the league stage will automatically qualify for the final, while the next two teams on the list will compete in an Eliminator for the other spot.
The UP Warriorz are currently third in the standings, while the Gujarat Giants are fourth.
How Can RCB Qualify For The Playoffs?
RCB are mathematically still in the playoff race despite losing five matches and languishing at the bottom of the table. However, they will require a little luck in order for that to happen.
For starters, RCB must win all three of their remaining matches. They play the UP Warriorz on Wednesday, the Gujarat Giants on Saturday, and the Mumbai Indians the following Tuesday.
If they accomplish this, they will have six points from eight games.
Half of the work is done.
It is now time to pray.
For what do you pray?
Please pray that the UP Warriorz lose all four of their remaining games and finish with four points.
Second, RCB will hope that Gujarat Giants win against UP Warriorz but lose their other two games. It will also keep them at four points, allowing RCB to finish third and qualify without having to rely on complex net run-rate calculations.
Are Their Other Possiblities?
Yes, but it will become more complicated.
How?
If UP Warriorz win one of their remaining matches, they will have six points, the same as RCB if they win all of their remaining matches. Furthermore, if Gujarat Giants win two of their remaining games, they will have six points.
There’s also the possibility that all three will finish with four points each, bringing NRR into play. Currently, the UP Warriorz have the highest NRR of the three teams.
