Yashpal Sharma, born in India on August 11, 1954, played cricket on the international stage. Throughout the ’70s and ’80s, he was a devastating batsman in the middle of the line-up. He was a vital member of the Indian team that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup. Yashpal Sharma scored 260 runs for his Punjab team in a 1972 cricket match against a Jammu and Kashmir school team. Within two years, he was a vital member of the state and North Zone teams competing for and winning the Vizzy Trophy. After Yashpal’s success at the World Cup, his career declined. After a dismal showing in the 1983/84 season against Pakistan and the West Indies, he was cut from the Test squad. After being kicked out of the Test squad, he did play in a few One-Day Internationals (ODIs), but he was never invited back.
In the 1987/88 season, he moved from Punjab to Haryana, where he also played for Railways. After hanging up his mitts, Yashpal gave umpiring a go. He served for two years as a selector until December 2005 and was reappointed in 2008.
