The 17th edition of the 10K Valencia, held on Sunday, 12 January, saw Andreas Almgren emerge as the champion in what was a great comeback.

Despite a late start,  Almgren recovered to lead in the closing stages in a group of three alongside Vincent Langat of Kenya and Switzerland’s Dominic Lobalu.

The the 10K Valencia race is run on a loop course, with roughly the first and last 700 m (2,300 ft) being run on the same section of road, but in different directions.

Langat bolstered the pace at the front as he tried to break his two rivals, but it soon became a duel between the two Europeans.

However, it was the 29-year-old Swede who gathered power in the last 50 metres to win the title in a new European record of 26:53. He was also the world junior 800m bronze medallist back in 2014.

South Sudan-born Lobalu, who finished fourth in the 5000m at Paris 2024 when representing the Refugee Olympic Team, ended second ahead of Langat on what has been claimed the fastest 10km road course in the world.

Uruguay’s Santiago Catrofe set a new South American record of 27:16 in eighth place.

Reigning world and Olympic triathlon champion Alex Yee took part in the run-up towards running in April’s London Marathon. The Briton crossed the line in 29th place in 28:07.

Rory Leonard in 15th place with 27:38 broke the British 10km record previously jointly held by Mo Farah and Emile Cairess.

Another  historical record was also created at 10K Valencia with the Record of Spain.  Ilias Fifa crossed the finish line in 27:41, beating the time achieved by Abdessamad Oukhelfen (27:44) in the 2024 edition.

In the women’s race Kenyan runner Hellen Ekalale Lobun took the title  in 29:30, pulling clear of Ethiopia’s Girmawit Gebrzihair Gebru in the closing stages.
