During the first Test against Pakistan at Optus Stadium, Usman Khawaja, Australia’s seasoned opener, took a silent stance by wearing a black armband after being barred from displaying messages on his shoes in solidarity with Gaza.

Opting to bat first, Khawaja covered the messages on his shoes and chose to don a black armband while stepping out to open the innings with David Warner. Cricket Australia clarified, stating, “He is wearing it in solidarity and respect per his Insta post yesterday,” about Khawaja’s intentions.

Khawaja had previously displayed messages such as ‘all lives are equal’ and ‘freedom is a human right’ on his shoes during Australia’s practice session. However, Cricket Australia addressed the situation on Wednesday, citing ICC regulations that prohibit the showcasing of personal messages, expressing their expectation for players to adhere to these rules.

The veteran cricketer, in response, posted a video on social media, expressing his determination to challenge the ICC’s stance on displaying written messages on shoes. He highlighted instances where other players had depicted personal beliefs or religious symbols without facing strict repercussions.

Khawaja spoke out on Fox Cricket ahead of the Test, stating, “There’s plenty of guys who have written on their shoes before. There’s other guys that have written religious things on their equipment, and under the ICC guidelines, that’s not technically allowed, but the ICC never says anything on that.”

Mike Baird, CA Chairman, echoed support for Khawaja while emphasizing the importance of adhering to ICC regulations. He acknowledged the player’s desire to use his voice in the context of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East but stressed the necessity of respecting established rules when representing the team and the ICC.

Baird mentioned on ABC Grandstand, “When the team and ICC is involved, there are rules involved. So from our point of view, (we’re) very happy to support Uzzy (Khawaja) and he’s obviously directly impacted by the conflict that is going on in the Middle East and wants to use his voice. It’s just a question of how we use it noting the rules that are in place.”

The incident surrounding Khawaja’s silent protest during the Test highlights the ongoing debate within cricket about individual expressions and adherence to international regulations, even amidst players’ advocacy for social causes.
