South Africa’s premier T20 League, SA20, is gearing up for an eagerly anticipated second season commencing on January 10, 2024, following a highly successful inaugural edition in 2023.
Launched just a year ago, SA20 has already left a significant impact on the landscape of South African cricket. The inaugural season saw 33 enthralling matches played over 32 days, drawing enthusiastic crowds to stadiums. The league showcased renowned cricket icons like Faf du Plessis, Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, and Rashid Khan, among others.
Graeme Smith, SA20’s League Commissioner and former South African captain, expressed immense enthusiasm, highlighting the league’s success. He remarked, “Our first season surpassed all expectations, featuring a mix of local budding talent and global cricket superstars. The atmosphere in the stadiums was electric, and the quality of cricket displayed was exceptional. SA20 has rejuvenated cricket’s spirit in South Africa, catalyzing its revival.”
Smith, looking forward, emphasized SA20’s vision, stating, “Our goal is clear – to establish SA20 as a nurturing ground for South African talent, propelling South African cricket to new heights. We possess all the essential elements – top-tier players globally, a passionate fan base, and robust global broadcast partnerships. The upcoming season will surpass the high standards set, introducing fresh talent to brighten South African cricket for years to come.”

SA20 holds the distinction of being the first T20 league outside India with IPL owners for all six local franchises. This involvement is anticipated to bolster the league’s strength and global standing, especially given the perfect time zone alignment for the Indian audience.
“The engagement of IPL franchises is a significant triumph for SA20,” Smith commented. “These franchises boast unparalleled success globally and will undoubtedly enhance the league. Moreover, the expertise brought by players who have represented these franchises worldwide will immensely benefit young South African talent.”
The upcoming SA20 season promises high-octane matches, elite players, and a vibrant atmosphere. Broadcasted live on SuperSport in South Africa, Viacom 18 in India, and Sky Sports in the UK, the league pledges to captivate a global audience. Spread across six premier venues in South Africa, Season 2 offers an increased prize pool of R50 million, intensifying the thrill of competition.
SA20, with its blend of international stars and local talent, aims not just to entertain but also to nurture cricket development in South Africa. By attracting global cricketing icons, the league aims to elevate the sport and inspire budding cricketers. It serves as a platform for discovering and refining the next generation of cricket stars for the Proteas, evident from players who transitioned from SA20 to representing the national team.
