Longest Unbeaten Runs in Premier League History

Several clubs in the Premier League have shown tremendous consistency to win one game after another in a display of dominance. Let us have a look at teams with the longest unbeaten streak in the history of the Premier League. 

1. Arsenal – 49 (May 2003–October 2004)

Arsenal is on the top of the list of the longest unbeaten runs in the history of the Premier League. They remained unbeaten in 49 games between May 2003 and October 2004. Over the 38-game league that season, the Gunners ended the campaign with 12 draws and 26 wins. 

The north London outfit recorded some incredible results on their way to greatness, with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea and a 5-0 thumping of Leeds United being just some of the highlights. Their unbeaten streak into the following season was ended by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

2. Liverpool – 44 (January 2019–February 2020)

Liverpool, too,  was eyeing to have an unbeaten season during the 2019-20 campaign. However, Watford shocked one and all as they dubbed the Reds 3-0 winners at Vicarage Road. That was the first of three defeats that Liverpool faced during the 2019/20 season.

In that season, Liverpool registered victories over Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Everton. Jurgen Klopp’s side finished 18 points ahead of second-placed Manchester City (99) points table.

3. Chelsea – 40 (October 2004–October 2005)

The day after Arsenal’s 49-game unbeaten run came to an end at Old Trafford, Chelsea started a long unbeaten stretch of their own. Chelsea won the 2004-05 Premier League title with 95 points, 12 ahead of Arsenal, and went the whole season unbeaten at Stamford Bridge. The club lost just once in English top flight all season, suffering a surprise 1-0 reverse away to a Manchester City side that would finish eighth.

Chelsea made some memorable wins including a 4-0 victory over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge, as well as a 4-1 win against Liverpool at Anfield. Their unbeaten sequence stretched into the 2005-06 campaign before it was put to an end by Manchester United at Old Trafford. Jose Mourinho’s side conceded just 19 goals across those 40 games, and kept an impressive 24 clean sheets.

4. Arsenal – 30 (December 2001–October 2002)

Arsenal registered 13 consecutive victories as they clinched the Premier League title with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.  They also lifted the FA Cup to complete another double.

The Gunner’s unbeaten run included wins against Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle United and their title-winning victory at Old Trafford . Their run ended in October 2002 as Wayne Rooney scored the first PL goal, which came in the 90th minute at Goodison Park.

5. Manchester City – 30 (April 2017–January 2018)

Manchester City broke several Premier League records during their unbeaten streak including the most points in a Premier League season (100), most away points (50), most wins (32) and most consecutive victories (18).

City’s unbeaten run consists of some memorable results including a 5-0 victory over Liverpool at home, a 6-0 win away at Watford and a 7-2 win over Stoke City. Their lossless sequence came to an end in a 4-3 loss at Anfield in January 2018, one of just two defeats throughout the memorable campaign.
