Mattias Skjelmose won the Amstel Gold Race 2025 in a thrilling photo finish.
The Danish cyclist beat three-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar and double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel to win the race in the Netherlands.
It was the biggest victory of 24-year-old Skjelmose’s career, who won by less than half a wheel’s length.
Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock, who was defending his title in the Netherlands, finished ninth.
However, this was the second successive defeat for Pogacar, who won the Tour of Flanders earlier this month before finishing second at the Paris-Roubaix last week.
Evenepoel, who finished third, marked his return from a serious injury following a crash last year. The Belgian won the Brabantse Pijl in his first race back on Friday.
In the women’s race, the Dutch trio completed the podium with Mischa Bredewold finishing the 157.3km course in just over four hours. Her compatriots Ellen van Dijk and Puck Pieterse in second and third.
The Amstel Gold Race marks the turning point of the spring classics, with the climbers and stage racers replacing the cobbled classics riders as the favourites.
The event is a one-day classic road cycling race held annually since 1966 in the province of Limburg, Netherlands. Since 1989 the event has been included in season-long competitions at the highest level of UCI, as part of the UCI Road World Cup (1989–2004), the UCI ProTour (2005–2010), UCI World Ranking (2009–2010) and since 2011 of the UCI World Tour.
