Fabio Deivson Lopes Maciel broke a record that had lasted for 28 years

Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio Deivson Lopes Maciel broke a record that had lasted for 28 years by setting a new one for all-time competitive football appearances.

Over the course of his 28-year career, the Brazilian has made 1,391 competitive appearances, which is one more than the record officially held by Peter Shilton, a former England international.

Although the precise number of appearances Shilton made has been somewhat disputed, the Guinness Book of Records lists 1,390.

“It is a great satisfaction to reach this record wearing the shirt of Fluminense, which opened its doors to me,” Fabio was quoted as saying. “Now it’s [time] to continue playing and looking for new achievements with each game.”

2-0 victory over America de Cali in the Copa Sudamericana

A special plate, painting, and shirt commemorating his accomplishment were given to the 44-year-old, who wore them during his 1,391st game, a 2-0 victory over America de Cali in the Copa Sudamericana.

At the Maracana, Fluminense’s home field, a film of tributes was shown prior to the game, and club president Mario Bittencourt was present to commemorate the milestone.

Fabio’s career spans football eras: he played with Ronaldinho in the 1997 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, and 16 of his current Fluminense teammates were born after his professional debut.

Fabio began playing for the Rio team in 2022 and has since made 235 appearances. He helped the team win the Copa Libertadores the year after he joined and make it to the final of the Club World Cup this summer.

He made 976 appearances during his 16-year tenure with Cruzeiro

He made 976 appearances during his 16-year tenure with Cruzeiro from 2005 to 2021, which accounted for the majority of his record 1,391 outings. Additionally, he played 30 games for Uniao Bandeirante and 150 for Vasco do Gama. Additionally, the veteran played 0 games when on loan at Atletico Paranaense for a season.

He hasn’t played for his country in any of his outings, in contrast to Shilton, who earned 125 caps.

He also holds the record for the most clean sheets in football history, surpassing former Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon in the standings with a new record of 507 in a 0-0 tie with Mamelodi Sundowns at this year’s Club World Cup.
