PV Sindhu’s underwhelming performance continued as she went down in the opening round of the women’s singles event at the Hong Kong Open 2025 badminton tournament on Wednesday.

Sindhu, currently occupying the 14th spot in the world ranking, lost the first-round match 15-21, 21-16, 21-19 against world No. 27 Line Christophersen of Denmark at the Hong Kong Coliseum.

The two-time Olympic medallist lost for the first time to the 25-year-old Christophersen in six meetings.

Sindhu took an early 3-1 lead in the first game before her opponent equalised 5-all. Leading 14-13, Sindhu played in attacking mode allowing Christophersen just one point before taking the opener.

The second game saw the two-time Olympic medallist leading 13-12 before errors cropped up in her game as she gave away five points on the trot.

The match went to the decider with both players going neck and neck till 19-all before two decisive points for Christophersen ended Sindhu’s campaign.

This was PV Sindhu’s sixth first-round exit on the BWF World Tour in the 2025 season.

Her best performance of the year came at the BWF World Championships in Paris, where she made it to the quarter-finals. She was eventually defeated by Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani in a hard-fought match.
