IPL 2026 Auction Wrap: The Indian Premier League auction on Tuesday night in Abu Dhabi turned into a headline-grabbing event, with big-money bids and surprise deals lighting up the Etihad Arena. A total of 77 player slots were available, and all 10 franchises came ready to spend.
The biggest moment of the evening came when Australia all-rounder Cameron Green rewrote the history books. Kolkata Knight Riders snapped him up for ₹25.20 crore, making him the most expensive overseas player ever in IPL history.
IPL 2026 Auction Wrap – New Rules, New Records
Although Cameron Green went for a record amount, his actual playing contract will be capped at ₹18 crore due to the new IPL auction rules. Any amount above the cap will be diverted to the BCCI’s welfare fund.
Until now, the record for the most expensive overseas player belonged to Mitchell Starc, who was bought by KKR for ₹24.75 crore ahead of the IPL 2024 season.
At the IPL 2026 auction, teams had a combined purse of ₹237.55 crore. The minimum base price was set at ₹30 lakh, while the highest base price stood at ₹2 crore.

Uncapped Indian Players Steal the Show
The spotlight wasn’t just on overseas stars. Uncapped Indian players enjoyed a dream evening, especially at the Chennai Super Kings table.
CSK made Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma the joint-most expensive uncapped players in IPL history, picking them up for ₹14.2 crore each. Prashant first broke the record, and Kartik matched it soon after.
Previously, Avesh Khan held this record after being signed by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹10 crore ahead of IPL 2023.

Kolkata Knight Riders Go Big and Finish Early
Three-time champions KKR entered the auction with the biggest purse of ₹64.30 crore and only 12 players on their roster. Despite that, they were the first team to complete a full 25-player squad. Along with Cameron Green, KKR also made a major move by signing Sri Lanka fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana for ₹18 crore.
Squad Rules and Auction Overview
For IPL 2026, each franchise was given a total budget of ₹125 crore. Teams were required to build squads of at least 18 players and no more than 25, including a maximum of eight overseas players.
Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants ended the auction without filling their full overseas quota, both stopping at seven foreign players.
In total, the 10 teams filled 77 slots from a pool of 369 cricketers.
Smart Moves from Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians came into the auction with a tight budget of just ₹2.75 crore. Despite limited funds, they managed to strengthen their squad by signing experienced wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock for ₹1 crore.

At the IPL 2025 player auction, Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player in IPL history after being signed by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore.
