Former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has once again made questionable remarks on women competing in MMA. Over the years, women have made a huge impact in the world of sports. However, it wasn’t always the case.

Women competing in sports were frowned upon at one time, and it was especially difficult for those who wanted to compete in combat sports. Fighters like Ronda Rousey paved the way years ago to bring women’s MMA to where it is today.

However, Khabib Nurmagomedov, was never really a fan of women competing in MMA. He has been quite vocal about how he believes women don’t belong in fighting. He did the same recently while speaking as an ambassador for Sun Hills Development.

Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn’t recommend women to fight in MMA

He told real estate agent Valeriya that while women can train in MMA, he wouldn’t recommend it due to physical differences and traditional roles shaped by his faith and Dagestani culture. He referenced his past comment from 2018 that women should ‘fight at home’ and prefers men handling men’s work.

The remarks drew sharp divides, with some citing champs like Valentina Shevchenko’s seven title defenses against his three, while others backed his emphasis on societal roles amid women’s MMA growth since 2013. He said:

“Every person in life has a mission. For a man, it’s to raise children, take care of the family, take care of loved ones. There are very few women who take on big responsibilities. It’s very hard for them. It’s not without reason. God created it this way: A woman is weaker, a man is stronger. People want to change and mix all of this. I don’t know how you feel about it, but I like when a man does men’s work, and a woman does women’s work.”

While the safety aspect might make sense to many, Khabib Nurmagomedov is also putting women under the cliches that they have fought hard to overcome as the years have gone by. That said, while the statement did garner a lot of attention, we should continue expecting women to excel across all fields, let alone combat sports.
