Rohit Sharma is a regular opener for India in the limited-overs format, in recent times started to be an opener for India even in the test format. Rohit Sharma played Test cricket for India even before late 2019 but as a middle-order batsman. Since late 2019 he was drafted for the role of the opener. His records at home have been terrific, but the concern has been his performance overseas. But he still played some useful knocks overseas. Rohit Sharma as an opener has so far done a brilliant job for India as an opener.
In the limited overs, he has been an opener for India who plays all types of glorious shots-the flamboyant drives and the bighoicks. But in Test cricket, he shows his patience and determination along with cubing his natural attacking instincts as per the needs of the team and the situation of the game. We could see this in the way Indian opener Rohit Sharma has played in England including the 1st World Test Championship final against New Zealand.
Rohit Sharma most of the time gets the start in his innings in England but failed to make it into big scores. However, in Lord’s against England in the Second test he scored 83, which astonishingly being the highest test score overseas. Rohit Sharma was just 17 runs short of a century at Lord’s, thereby he missed the opportunity to register his name in the Lord’s Honour’s Board. He was dismissed by Jimmy Anderson after scoring 83 runs.
The Indian opener spoke to Indian cricketer turned commentator Dinesh Karthik. Said that while he was disappointed to miss out on the century, there wasn’t much he could do to that brilliant delivery from Anderson.
Rohit Sharma started by saying that “I am a little disappointed not to get to that three-figure mark but again, I saw the replay probably 20 times and I couldn’t have done anything to that ball. What matters is the position the team is in because it’s not about individuals. Your records can take a backseat but this is a team sport. Anything you do and it helps the team, I am happy with it”.
Rohit Sharma further said that he liked the way he batted, especially in the last few innings by taking a more cautious and circumspect approach. Even though it is against his instinct, he is ready to take up those challenges.
Rohit Sharma further added by saying that “That’s Test cricket, you can’t bring out your flashy drives especially when the weather conditions are like that. You need to understand that and the experience that I have, I need to apply that. It was testing in the middle so all your basics of Test cricket come into play, things like playing with soft hands and leaving the ball outside off. It is against my nature but I loved it. Honestly speaking, I love doing that”.
