For years, football felt split into two sides. Some supported Lionel Messi, others backed Cristiano Ronaldo, and almost every major football debate somehow returned to those two names.
From Ballon d’Or races to Champions League nights and unforgettable El Clasicos, Messi and Ronaldo spent more than a decade competing at a level the sport had rarely seen before. Their rivalry became the defining story of an entire generation.
Now, with both players in different stages of their careers, Lionel Messi has spoken openly about the relationship he shared with Ronaldo during those years and explained that the rivalry was always built on competition rather than personal issues.
“We didn’t meet often except at matches or award ceremonies, and we were always on good terms,” Messi said.

Lionel Messi Says Respect Always Existed Between Them
Even though football fans constantly compared them, Lionel Messi explained that the situation was completely natural because of where both players were competing at the time.
“It’s something natural in the world of football. I was at Barcelona and he was at Real Madrid, and we were competing for everything both collectively and individually, so people were always comparing us,” Messi said.
At their peak, every season seemed to become a direct battle between the two stars. Goals, trophies, records, and individual awards were all part of the conversation, with both players continuing to push each other higher year after year. Lionel Messi believes that competition ultimately created something special for football.
“Now we’re at different stages in our lives, but what happened was a beautiful sporting rivalry,” he explained.
Despite how intense things looked on the pitch during the Barcelona and Real Madrid years, Messi made it clear there was never personal hostility between them away from football.
“But our relationship was always good and respectful, and everything that happened was purely athletic. There was nothing personal,” he added.
The rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo shaped modern football in a way few eras ever have. For more than a decade, supporters around the world watched two players consistently produce numbers and performances that almost stopped feeling normal.
Even now, long after their biggest battles in Spain, conversations around Messi and Ronaldo continue because of how much they changed expectations in football. Rather than being remembered for conflict, their rivalry is increasingly being viewed as two legendary players pushing each other to historic levels at the same time.
