Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings started their IPL 2026 campaign on an impressive note with a seven-match unbeaten run, however, they lost their momentum heading into the second phase of IPL with three back-to-back losses. PBKS are all set to face Axar Patel-led Delhi Capitals, who have won only one of their five previous matches.

What Punjab Kings need to do to secure a playoff spot?

Although Punjab Kings look good on paper, they should not take DC lightly as they are not yet mathematically out of the qualification race. DC will head into the match with a “nothing to lose attitude.”

PBKS will take on DC today, followed by matches against Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Lucknow Super Giants. PBKS need to win two matches to remain in the playoff qualification race, while winning three matches would be ideal to guarantee a top-four finish.

Punjab will target a top-two finish, which offers two opportunities to reach the final; they cannot afford to underestimate DC. A defeat against the Axar Patel-led team would not only damage their hopes of securing a top-two spot but could also push PBKS into a virtual must-win scenario in the race for the playoffs.

What Punjab Kings need to do to secure a top-two finish?

Teams with 17 points are usually considered enough for qualification, while teams with 16 points usually secure a playoff spot. However, if PBKS manage to win only one match out of three, they can still qualify as they have a better Net Run Rate compared to other teams.

Meanwhile, if Punjab Kings manage to win three of their remaining matches they will almost certainly seal a place in Qualifier 1, with only two teams capable of finishing above them mathematically.

However, ending the league stage on 17 points PBKS will have to depend  on their Net Run Rate, which currently stands at a strong +0.571. With Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) also pushing for a top-two finish, their upcoming clash against Punjab could effectively turn into a high-voltage clash for a Qualifier 1 spot, particularly if Delhi Capitals pull off a win on Monday.

For Punjab Kings, avoiding a defeat against Delhi is crucial if they want to keep their playoff destiny firmly in their own hands.
