Jannik Sinner’s quest to secure his maiden Italian Open title continued on Tuesday as the World No. 1 calmly cruised into the quarter-finals with a straight-set win over countryman Andrea Pellegrino 6-2, 6-3.
Jannik Sinner equals Novak Djokovic’s record
Jannik Sinner registered his 31st consecutive win at the Masters 1000 level, equaling the record previously held by Novak Djokovic. If Sinner manages to win the quarter-final clash, he will claim the record outright
“I am very happy with the outcome. I am very happy for him. We played seven years ago in a smaller court, and it is nice,” Sinner said after his win. “From an Italian point of view, it is amazing there are so many Italians in the round of 16. It was a good match for both of us.”
Andrea Pellegrino displayed a commendable show against Sinner
Meanwhile, reaching the last 16 of his home tournament marks Pellegrino’s finest achievement at a Masters 1000 event so far.
The 29-year-old aims to climb to a career-high ranking of World No. 123 after not only making his first-ever main draw appearance at a top-tier ATP tournament, but also earning the opportunity to face Italy’s biggest sporting icon in front of a packed crowd of more than 10,000 spectators.
Backed by strong support from the home fans, Pellegrino showcased a commendable display against the current dominant force. Whenever Sinner allowed even the slightest opening, the Italian displayed an impressive touch.
Jannik Sinner emerges as top favourite for the title
If Sinner wins a record-breaking sixth straight Masters 1000 title, he will script history and become the first Italian to win at the Foro Italico since Adriano Panatta 50 years ago.
With long-time rival Carlos Alcaraz sidelined through injury and Alexander Zverev crashing out, Jannik Sinner has now emerged as the favourite for the title as he continues his preparations for a potential career Grand Slam bid at Roland Garros.
Meanwhile, defending Rome champion Zverev suffered a surprise three-set defeat to Luciano Darderi, who battled back brilliantly to secure the first top-10 victory of his career.
