What should have been another exciting day at the Giro d’Italia ended up sparking major discussion for a completely different reason. During stage six of the race, two spectators were reportedly identified by police after running toward the peloton and attempting to interact with riders while they were moving at high speed.
The incident happened near San Vitaliano with roughly 50 kilometers left in the stage. Videos shared online appeared to show the two men stepping into the road several times as riders approached, while another person filmed the entire moment nearby. The footage quickly spread across social media and drew criticism from cycling fans and teams.
One of the spectators even appeared to make contact with a rider from Soudal Quick-Step during the incident. Thankfully, nobody crashed, but many riders were visibly unhappy afterward because of how dangerous the situation could have become.
Respect the riders. Respect the race. Respect the #GirodItalia
🫶 Fans, Tifosi. We love you on the roadside. We love your enthusiasm, we love that you cheer on the riders, we love that you dress like flamingos.

Giro d’Italia authorities react
According to reports in Italy from the Giro d’Italia, the two men involved, aged 19 and 20, were later identified by authorities and reported to prosecutors in Nola for creating danger during a sporting event. Local reports suggest they could potentially face bans from attending sporting events in the future, along with possible fines.
Alberto Bettiol spoke about the moment after the stage and explained how risky situations like this can become for cyclists traveling in a tightly packed peloton.
Bettiol revealed that riders were shocked by how close the spectators of Giro d’Italia came to the group, especially considering the speed they were carrying at that point in the race. He also mentioned that former race leader Thomas Silva reacted angrily immediately after passing the spectators.
The official Giro d’Italia account later posted its own message online asking fans to respect both the riders and the race. Organizers made it clear that supporter energy is appreciated, but there is a line that cannot be crossed when rider safety is involved.
Despite the controversy, the stage itself still delivered plenty of drama on the road. Davide Ballerini eventually claimed victory for XDS Astana after a difficult finish on wet cobbled streets in Napoli.
After the race, Ballerini tried to take a balanced view of the situation. He suggested the spectators may not have fully understood the danger of their actions, but he also stressed that fans must respect riders during live racing.
Cycling has seen several similar incidents in recent years, especially during major races where fans stand extremely close to the road. While crowd atmosphere remains one of the sport’s biggest attractions, moments like this continue to raise concerns about rider safety and spectator behavior.
