Cricket Australia is on the lookout for the next ODI captain of the team as Aaron Finch concluded his adorned run as one recently. Finch bid adieu to the 50-over white ball format after facing a dry spell in recent times. Aaron Finch played his last ODI on Sunday against New Zealand in a series where Australia white-washed New Zealand 3-0.
According to the latest reports, David Warner is turning out to be the most probable for the skipper role. Cricket Australia is currently mulling over the decision to overturn the captaincy ban placed over Warner. David Warner sustained a lifetime captaincy ban for his involvement in the infamous sandpaper scandal of 2018. Records state that Warner was responsible for instilling the idea and then captain Steve Smith for carrying it out. Smith also faced strict repercussions for his less-than-graceful action.
Aaron Finch, Pat Cummins Want David Warner as the Next Skipper

However, his teammates have backed him for the skipper role after he’s faced the ban for over 5 years now. The former captain put forth Warner’s name as his successor. “I think CA (Cricket Australia) are revisiting what that looks like. He’s someone I’ve played under a few times for Australia when he’s had the opportunity to captain, and he’s been fantastic. He’s an unbelievable tactical captain and someone who at the time the guys loved playing under,” Finch said.
“I’m not 100 percent sure of what CA’s position is on it. But would I like to see it overturned? (Yes) he’s someone who, you do your time and he’s well and truly done that I think,” Finch added.
Moreover, Australia’s test captain, Pat Cummins also backed Warner for the captaincy position. “If you were going to do all the formats and every game, I don’t think that’s realistic. Especially as a fast bowler, I think you do need to find windows to rest. I think you could manage that as well,” Cummins said.
“It’s not our decision to make but Davey is always a fantastic leader around the team. He makes my job as a captain very easy. I don’t know the first thing about batting so having guys like Davey there to look after that is great,” he added.

David Warner recently showed his openness to the idea if CA is open to overturn the ban. “The man next to me (Pat Cummins) is the key, he’s the Test captain. I’m sure he gets the first opportunity. Any opportunity you get asked to captain, it’s a privilege. For my circumstances, that’s in Cricket Australia’s hands. I can only concentrate on what I have to do and that’s using the bat and trying to score as many runs as I can,” said Warner.
“My phone’s here [if CA want to call for a talk about leadership]. What’s done is done in the past. The good thing is there is a new board that has come along. I’m always happy to sit down and have a chat and talk about anything they need to talk about. I’m just happy, enjoying my cricket and putting my best foot forward for the team,” he added.
