The National Cricket Team of South Africa has evolved and managed to register excellent victories over the years. The team is given the nickname, ‘the Proteas’, which is said to derive from the national flower of South Africa, ‘Protea cynaroides’. However, the team is said to make an entry into the International Cricket world at a time when they hosted an England cricket team in the 1888–89 season.
But later, the ICC imposed an international ban on the team which remained active till 1991. And, when the ban was lifted the team played against strong competitors like India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and West Indies for the first time.
Moreover, overall, the team is considered as a strong one and has also managed to achieve the number-one positions on numerous occasions. The team is considered as one of the most successful in ODI cricket, as they managed to win over 60% of their competitions.
According to reports, they achieved the ‘ICC Champions Trophy’ (1998) in the organised tournaments of ICC. Furthermore, right now the team holds the 6th position in ODIs, 3rd in T20Is and 3rd in Tests, as per the rankings. However, the South Africa team were defeated in several matches with a margin of 1 or 2 runs. Being a tough and strong competitor, they also lost some interesting and exciting matches.

Winning and losing are considered as an integral part of each and every battle. Similarly, there have been instances when the strong and experienced team like South Africa were beaten over by their competitors, with a margin of few runs. However, there are more similar matches where the South African cricket team had to face the same situation. Even after putting in a lot of effort and showcasing their excellent form, the Proteas failed to register a victory to their names in some of the competitive matches.
