With 25 games done every team in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League has played 5 matches. Rajasthan Royals are the table toppers after winning 4 out of their 5 games. The Sanju Samson-led team is the only team to have 4 out of their 5 games. While at the bottom of the table is Delhi Capitals who are still searching for a win. Here is how are the teams positioned at the points table after 25 games.
Battle for the play-offs spot
With every team still having 9 games remaining there are a lot of possibilities and almost every team can still qualify for the playoffs, even Delhi Capitals. Last season, Royal Challengers Bangalore qualified for the playoffs with 16 points. They were placed in 4th position at the points table.
Going by the understanding that getting 16 or more than 16 points can get you to the playoffs means that mathematically the top 4 spots are up for grabs for every team. For someone like the DC, they will have to turn around their fate massively and would have to win at least 8 out of their 9 remaining matches. While making this miraculous effort they would have to even think about their negative 1.488 Net Run Rate (NRR).
Table toppers, Rajasthan Royals will have to win another 4 or 5 matches to guarantee a playoff spot. But given their current position at the table they would eye the top-2 spot and would be disappointed if they fail to do so.
Lucknow Super Giants, Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians have 6 points each and are placed in the respective order due to differences in NRR. LSG will go against RR in today’s match and a win for them could move them up to the 1st position. The five teams with 6 points each would aim to win at least 6 matches out of their remaining 9 games. This would take their tally to 18 points almost guaranteeing a playoff spot regardless of how other teams perform.
Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad are 7th, 8th and 9th respectively with 4 points in hand. Given the tough competition for the playoffs spots, they would need to win at least 7 games and avoid defeats with huge margins that can take a toll on their NRR.
