Wayne Douglas Gretzky, a Canadian retired competitive ice hockey player and veteran head coach, was born on January 26, 1961. Gretzky, who was brought up in Brantford, Ontario, developed his abilities on a backyard rink and often competed in minor hockey at a higher level than his contemporaries. Gretzky’s intellect, endurance, and understanding of the game were unmatched, despite his underwhelming stature and strength. He contracted with the World Hockey Association’s (WHA) Indianapolis Racers in June 1978, and played there for a short while before even being transferred to the Edmonton Oilers.

Gretzky is the most latest player to have the wait time eliminated; he was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame shortly following his departure in 1999. Along with Jackie Robinson, whose uniform number 42 was stepped down by Major League Baseball in 1997, and Bill Russell, whose uniform number 6 was stepped down by the National Basketball Association in 2022, he seems to be the only hockey player and one of only three athletes in professional sports antiquity to end up receiving such an honour.

Gretzky obtained American citizenship through naturalisation, making him a dual citizen of both the United States and Canada. Prior to becoming a partner in the Arizona Coyotes, Gretzky had or shared ownership of two sports franchises. The attraction of Gretzky as a brand ambassador was significantly greater than that of other hockey players of his period. With endorsement deals with The Coca-Cola Company, Domino’s Pizza, Sharp Corporation, and Upper Deck Company among others, he was one of the top five athlete brand ambassadors in North America by 1995.
