Indian badminton stars, including PV Sindhu and the men’s doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, are set for a promising start in the BWF World Championships as the draw for the tournament was unveiled. The draw ceremony for the 28th edition of the Championships, slated to take place from August 21 to 27 in Copenhagen, Denmark, was conducted at the Badminton World Federation headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Renowned shuttler PV Sindhu, a former world champion, has been seeded 16th in the women’s singles category. With a first-round bye, she will commence her journey in the second round, facing either Vietnam’s Thuy Linh Nguyen or familiar opponent Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara.
In men’s doubles, the second-seeded pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who clinched bronze in the previous edition, have secured a first-round bye as well. They will challenge either Ireland’s Joshua Magee and Paul Reynolds or Australians Kenneth Zhe Hooi Choo and Ming Chuen Lim in the second round.
Favorable draws were also granted to Indian men’s singles players. Ninth-seeded HS Prannoy will launch his campaign against world no. 56 Kalle Koljonen of Finland. The 11th-seeded Lakshya Sen, who secured a bronze medal in 2021, will open against world No. 110 Georges Julien Paul of Mauritius.
However, 2021 finalist Kidambi Srikanth, currently ranked 20th in the world, faces a tougher start against Japan’s 15th-ranked Kenta Nishimoto in the unseeded category.
In women’s doubles, the 15th-seeded pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, will enter the second round following a bye. They will encounter either Chinese Taipei’s Chang Ching Hui and Yang Chin Tun or Estonia’s Kati-Kreet Marran and Helina Ruutel.
Lastly, in mixed doubles, Rohan Kapoor and N. Sikki Reddy will kick off their journey by facing Scottish duo Adam Hall and Julie MacPherson in the opening round.
